Sergeants now carry body worn camera

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today introduced body worn camera to ensure transparency and accountability of police sergeants in discharging their professional duties.

"We introduced the body worn camera today. The service has started with 15 cameras while 400 more cameras will be added in the days to come," said outgoing DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed after inaugurating the camera at Shahbagh here this morning.

"It is a 16 megapixel high resolution camera that could record the audio and video for eight hours and it could be monitored from the command centre. It can be worn on head or body," he said.

"Introduction of the camera could ensure transparency and accountability of police sergeants as it could take snap of all the activities and record conversation of police sergeants. The records could not be erased by the sergeants at their will," he added.

The American police, for the first time, used the camera last year. Each camera costs Taka 20,000.

Among others, additional police commissioner Mili Biswas, additional police commissioner (DB-Detective Branch) Maruf Hasan, and joint police commissioner Md Monirul Islam were present on the occasion.
