2014, a year of international achievement for Bangladesh

DHAKA, Dec 31, 2014 (BSS)- The year 2014 is considered as a
year of recognition and achievements for Bangladesh in the
international arena.
A number of efforts taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's
government has successfully attracted the global attention,
particularly in promoting education for girls and women,
eradicating poverty, raising living standard, health services and
social safety net across the country and in ICT sector.

Prime Minister herself, her daughter Saima Hossain Putul and her government have won a number of prestigious global awards brightening the image of the country. Besides, Bangladesh has won
a number of elections such as Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on September 8 received a special memento from UNESCO in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the promotion of girls' and women's education.

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova presented the memento titled "Tree of Peace" to the Prime Minister at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre here on the occasion of the
International Literacy Day 2014.
Receiving the memento, Sheikh Hasina dedicated it to all women and children of the country.

Before handing over the memento, the UNESCO director general said: "Her Excellency Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a strong advocate on world stage in girls and women education, a certain
prerequisite for political and economic empowerment."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the second time won the prestigious South South Cooperation Visionary Award for her government's efforts for eradicating poverty and raising living
standard, health services and social safety net across the country.
Prime Minister's Honorary ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy received the award in Washington on November 21 on behalf of his mother.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been elected as the chairperson of the executive committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, was elected as the president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Bangladesh's victory in the two global prestigious bodies is a unique and tremendous achievement that was attained as a mark of recognition to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's strong adherence to democracy and credible governance.
Saima Hossain Putul, noted international autism expert and daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, won the World Health Organization (WHO) award for her excellence in Public Health.

The World Health Organization (WHO) honored Saima Hossain with the prestigious award for her outstanding contributions to the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Saima Hossain is among the first two recipients of the newly instituted Award for Excellence in Public Health which was conferred by WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Region, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh.
Access to Information (a2i) Bangladesh won the World Summit on Information Society Award-2014 for its Digital Bangladesh Project. State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak on June 10 received the Prize at the WSIS+10 High Level Event of ITU at the ITU Head Quarters in Geneva.

Bangladesh has been re-elected as a council member of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for second consecutive term for 2015 to 2018 from Asia and Australia region. The election was held on October 27 at a plenipotentiary conference of ITU in Busan, South Korea, in which Bangladesh bagged 115 votes and was elected the council member.

Bangladesh has been elected vice-president at the '26th Meeting of the Parties of Montreal Protocol' and the '10th Meeting of 'Conference of the Parties of Vienna Convention'.

The meetings were held on November 20 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris where Deputy Minister for Environment and Forests Abdullah Al Islam Jacob was elected vice-president from Bangladesh.
