Hartal called by Jamaat is tantamount to contempt of court: Quamrul

DHAKA, Dec 31, 2014 (BSS)- Dhaka City Awami League joint general secretary and Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam today said hartal (total shutdown) called by Jamaat against the capital punishment handed down to the Al-Bard leader ATM Azharul Islam for his crimes against humanity tantamount to contempt of court.

"Today's hartal is against the court. They (Jamaat) will file appeal against the verdict of the tribunal on one hand and called for hartal on the other. It is tantamount to contempt of court," he said while speaking at an anti-hartal demonstration in front of Awami League central office at Bangabandhu Avenue' in the city.

Awami Samarthak Jote organised the anti-hartal demonstration with its chairman and Dhaka City Unit Awami League publicity secretary Abdul Huq Sabuj in the chair.

Acting president of Dhaka City Awami League (AL) MA Aziz, general secretary and Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram), AL central working committee member Enamul Huq Shamim, Dhaka City AL vice-president Faezuddin Miah and organising secretary Shahe Alam Murad, spoke among others.

Quamrul Islam said, "Hartal is a programme of destructive politics. Begum Khaleda Zia has been fanning the fire behind the hartal and for this reason they (Jamaat) dare to call hartal. We have to build resistance against the evil-force."

"Jamaat wants to destroy Bangladesh. They want to make the country dysfunctional. We have to resist them," the minister added.

Speaking at the rally, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said, "Today is the last day of the year 2014. The days that gone by are good and the coming days are bad. The year 2014 was the year for bold leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. And the coming year 2015 will be the year for Khaleda's ruination and the year as well for laying BNP to its grave."

The minister said, "Khaleda Zia is a man-eater. She doesn't like anything other than bloods. We don't call BNP by its name anymore as Khaleda Zia has now become the Ameer (chief) of Jamaat-Shibir. For this reason, leaders of her party even don't listen to her words."

Maya, also a valiant freedom fighter, said, "The national flag will never flutter on the cars of Razakars (collaborators of Pakistani occupation forces) in the country so long a single Awami Leaguer is alive."

Later, a big anti-hartal march was brought out from the rally venue.
