Police to work for people's welfare, new IGP says

DHAKA, Dec 31, 2014 (BSS) - The newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque today said police forces will work for welfare of the people and ensure their security by eliminating militancy, terrorism and other criminal activities.

Soon after taking the charge, the police chief vowed to make the police force more people oriented and friendly by eradicating all sorts of irregularities and ensuring engagement of the commoners in the police activities.

AKM Shahidul Hoque expressed his future plan at a briefing at the Police Headquarters Conference room.

During the press briefing Additional Inspector General of Police (Adi-IGP) Administration Mokhlesur Rahman, Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Asaduzzaman Miah and other high officials were present.

The IGP said he will not allow irregularities in the police force and the asked police personnel to work for the people's welfare and ensure security of the people.

"As the new police chief I will try to narrow the between the common people and police by changing the mind set and building mutual understanding with the cooperation of other police members," Shahidul added.

He said the police force will work to combat the backers of terrorism, extremism and militancy and it will undertake preventive measures against extremism and militancy.

Shahidul also paid rich tribute to Father of the National Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives in the war of liberation in 1971 and the police personnel who also sacrificed their lives on the black night of Match 25 at Razarbagh in 1971.

Earlier, the incumbent IGP formally gave a farewell to the outgoing IGP Hasan Mahmood Khandker. AKM Shahidul Hoque took charge of the police department as the 39th IGP.
