Gournadi upazila of Barisal was liberated on December 22, 1971

BARISAL, Dec 22, 2014(BSS) -During the Great Liberation War, the Pakistan army stationed in Gournadi upazila surrendered as late as December 22, 1971.
Several Freedom Fighters said that the Mujib Bahini and Nizam Bahini launched a combined attack on Gournadi College which had been temporarily taken over by the Pakistani forces. On the evening of December 22 the Pakistan army surrendered to Major D C Das of the Mitra Bahini.
It was here that the Pakistan army killed hundreds of people and dumped their corpses in the adjoining river and a nearby well.
On November 27 Md Sattar Commander sustained injuries and later succumbed to it after battling the Pakistani forces near Allah's Mosque in Kasba of Gournadi. On the next day, Altaf Hossain of South Chandshir village was martyred at the same place.
In Gourandi-Agailjhara area the first group of volunteers was created by former minister, Abdur Rab Serniabat and Abdul Karim Sardar, former MCA (member of constituent assembly).
Serniabat's eldest son Alhaj Abul Hasan Abdullah, currently MP from Barisal-1 constituency, led the Mujib Bahini team while his cousin Abdur Rakib Serniabat, Fazlur Rahman Haoladar, Major Shah Alam Talukdar assisted him.
In the battle Abul Kashem of Madaripur also played a vital role.

Abul Hasnat Abdullah recalling the battle said the Mujib Bahini attacked from the west, while the Nizam Bahini attacked from the east.
