Cabinet adopts obituary reference for Prof. Maqsudul Alam

DHAKA, Dec 22, 2014 (BSS)- The cabinet today adopted a obituary reference for the renowned genome scientist Professor Maqsudul Alam, who died on Dec 19 in the USA.

The obituary reference was adopted in the regular meeting of the cabinet held at Bangladesh secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the cabinet observed that the death of Maqsudul Alam has created a vacuum in scientific research, particularly agricultural research.

The cabinet expressed deep condolence at the premature death of Maqsudul Alam and recalled his contributios in inventing genome sequence of jute.

A dynamic team of scientists of Dhaka University, Jute Research Institute and IT organization Data Softwear led by Maqsudul Alam invented the genome sequence of jute in 2010 which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally announced on June 16, 2010.

"It's very sad that the brilliant scientist expired at a very premature age," the cabinet said.

The cabinet also recalled that father of Prof. Maqsudul alam is a martyred freedom fighter who served in the then EPR.
