Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said the 11th national election will be held soon after the January 5 polls by dissolving parliament if BNP shuns violence, demonstrations and cuts ties with Jamaat-e-Islami.
Addressing a joint meeting of Awami League Central Working Committee, Election Conducting Committee and AL Advisory Committee at her official residence Gono Bhaban alleged that the BNP-Jamaat alliance is fighting against the country and its people.
In an instant reaction, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told The Daily Star that in the prime minister’s speech there is no indication of the government’s making consensus with the opposition.
“The way prime minister has spoken cannot be the language of understanding between the government and the opposition,” Khan said over telephone.
Besides, the BNP leader said, it is also hard to believe that the party which wants to go to power through a farcical election without voting of people will step down from power.
He said the BNP will come up with a formal reaction to the prime minister’s proposal later.
