Leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League took position at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital “to resist attempt to create anarchy by the opposition activists”.
Defying rain, activists of the AL and its associate bodies marched towards the AL central office from different parts of the capital since the morning.
Several hundred workers of Dhaka city unit the AL, Jubo League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Awami Swechhasebak League and Sramik League were seen sitting on benches on the ground floor there.
They were chanting slogans like “Sheikh Hasina bhoy nai, rajpath chhari nai (Sheikh Hasina, don’t worry; We haven’t left the streets); Jamaat-Shibir Rajakar, ei muhurte Bangla chhar (Jamaat-Shibir men are Razakar, leave Bangladesh right away)”.
State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Qamrul Islam said the movement of the Jamaat-Shibir men who were marching towards Suhrawardy Udyan seemed ominous.
“People are panicky and think that the opposition might break their promise (of holding a peaceful rally),” he said.
“If they break the promise, the law enforcing agencies will show zero tolerance. Our leaders and activists are staying in the field,” he added.
Swechhasebok League general secretary Pankaj Debnath, who was staying in front of Bangabandhu Avenue since the morning, told reporters that they were ready to combat any kind of criminal activities and attempt to create anarchy.
“We will resist and make counter attack if we see any violent activates,” he added.
