Candidates hit campaign trail

6 AL mayoral aspirants likely to be elected unopposed; Pabna MP 'violates electoral law'
Rashidul Hasan and Pankag Karmakar
The Election Commission yesterday allocated electoral symbols to municipality mayor and ward councillor candidates, paving the way for electioneering.
Candidates started carrying out door-to-door visits with leaflets and other campaign materials to seek blessings from voters. Many contenders used loudspeakers and hung posters in their localities.
Meanwhile, violating the electoral code of conduct, Awami League lawmaker from Pabna-5 Golam Faruk Khandaker yesterday joined a programme along with AL mayor aspirant Rakib Hasan Tipu. In Golapganj of Sylhet, two government officials took part in the electioneering of AL mayor candidate Zakaria Ahmed, reported two correspondents.
In another development, the EC yesterday asked the police authorities to withdraw the OC of Uttar Matlab Police Station in Chandpur for allegedly working in favour of an AL candidate, said EC sources.
The commission also formed an enquiry committee to probe the complaint of the BNP mayor aspirant in Chatkhil of Noakhali that he was forced by some ruling AL men to affix sign to a paper for withdrawing his candidacy.
Mayor elections will be held in 228 municipalities on December 30 as AL mayor hopefuls are going to be elected uncontested in Pirojpur Sadar, Tungipara of Gopalganj, Feni Sadar, Parshuram of Feni, Chatkhil of Noakhali and Madarganj of Jamalpur municipalities.
The voters of Parshuram Municipality in Feni will be totally deprived of exercising their franchise as all the 10 councillors of the municipality are also going to be elected uncontested.
Besides, 64 general and reserved women ward councillors are also likely to be elected uncontested in different municipalities, including 44 in three municipalities of Feni.
According to EC statistics, a total of 923 mayor, around 8,500 general and 2,533 women councillor aspirants will take part in the polls.
LAWMAKER 'FLOUTS' LAW
In Pabna, AL lawmaker Golam Faruk Khandaker joined the opening ceremony of “Rana Shopping Complex and EveningTouch Hotel” on Press Club Road in the town. AL mayoral nominee Rakib Hasan Tipu was also present.
As per the electoral code of conduct, ministers and lawmakers cannot go to any electoral area other than joining state functions, EC's Deputy Secretary Shamsul Alam told The Daily Star.
Contacted, Faruk said he joined the event as it was not any electoral programme.
OFFICIALS IN CAMPAIGN
Several candidates complained that Dulal Ahmed, an employee of Golapganj Municipality, and Borhan Ahmed of Kailashtilla Gas Field took part in the electioneering of AL mayoral nominee Zakaria Ahmed, reported a correspondent.
Returning Officer Saidur Rahman said he would take action against the officials if anybody lodged a complaint with his office.
'WITHDRAW OC'
The EC yesterday asked the police authorities to withdraw the officer-in-charge of Uttar Matlab Police Station in Chandpur.
An allegation was raised against the OC that he was working in favour of Rafiqul Alam George, AL mayor candidate in Changerchar Municipality under Uttar Matlab Upazila.
“We found evidence that the allegation against the cop was true. That's why, we have made the decision,” an election commissioner told this newspaper seeking anonymity.
Besides, the EC will look into some similar allegations raised against the OCs of Kulaura Police Station of Moulvibazar and Habiganj Sadar Police Station.

Victorians face Bulls in BPL final today

Sports Reporter
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's Comilla Victorians will take on Mahmudullah Riyad's Barisal Bulls in the final of the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
The match will begin at 6:30pm and will be broadcast live on Channel 9.
The two teams had met twice in group stages and on both occasions, with Victorians winning by big margin on both occasions.
While speaking to reporters yesterday, Mashrafe said that while he expects a tougher contest from the Bulls in the final, he also expects his side to give it their all as well.
The Victorians' strength has so far been their unfaltering team spirit. They may not have too many big names, but the players looked extremely determined in each of their games and managed to give their best throughout the tournament. The key player for them will be Ashar Zaidi, a key contender for the player-of-the-tournament award, having scored 199 runs at an average of 66 and taken 16 wickets with his left-arm spin.
Bull, on the other hand, have depended upon a host of match-winners. In almost each of their games, they have found someone new to rely on. Their West Indian players -- Evin Lewis, Rayad Emrit and Kevon Cooper -- have been the revelations of the tournament. Chris Gayle might have left early, but Sabbir Rahman has made up for the Jamaican's absence by hitting at the right time. His last two knocks suggest that the all-rounder is eager to end the BPL on a high.

All social media, apps unblocked

Star Online Report
The government today unblocked all social media platforms including Skype, Twitter, WhatsApp and Viber.
Mobile phone operators and internet service providers in the country resumed the services after getting a letter from the telecom regulator this afternoon.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood told The Daily Star that they have taken the move following instructions from the government authorities.
A senior official of a mobile phone company told The Daily Star that they received a letter from the BTRC around 5:15pm.
“I am directed to instruct you to release all the social media apps that you were earlier instructed to stop, including Viber, WhatsApp, Line, Tango, Hangout, Skype, Imo, and Twitter,” read the letter issued by a BTRC official.
The BTRC took the step hours after State Minister for Telecom Tarana Halim told journalists that the government decided to unblock all social media and apps today.
The government blocked Facebook and other online messaging and calling services including WhatsApp and Viber since November 18 but reopened Facebook four days ago, and then blocked social media site Twitter, Skype and Imo yesterday.
