Peruvian Nobel Prize-winning writer Mario Vargas Llosa

 Peruvian Nobel Prize-winning writer Mario Vargas Llosa (89) has died. Local time, Sunday, his son Alvaro Vargas Llosa published a family statement on the social media X. CNN reported this information on Monday, citing the writer's family.Vargas Llosa won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010. The Swedish Academy highly praised his powerful writing. Mario wrote mainly in Spanish. Not only creative literature, he was also important for his political and economic analytical writing.In a family statement, the children said, "It is with deep sadness that we announce that my father Mario Vargas Llosa died today in Lima. He died peacefully surrounded by his family."

His first work was published in 1952. It was a play called 'La Guia del Inca'. His first novel, 'La Ciudad y los Perros', was published in 1963. In English, it is known as ‘The Time of the Hero’, which became a huge hit with readers. The book was later translated into more than a dozen languages.

Burgos Llosa’s memorable novels include ‘Conversation in the Cathedral (1969)’, ‘The War of the End of the World (1981)’ and ‘Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (1977)’. The book was based on the story of the book Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter and was made into a movie called ‘Tune in Tomorrow’ in 1990.

In a statement on Sunday, his three children said that Burgos Llosa’s death will be deeply mourned by his relatives, friends and readers around the world. But we hope that they, like us, will find comfort in knowing that he (Llosa) lived a long, eventful and fruitful life and left behind numerous literary works that will immortalize him.

The Peruvian president's office expressed deep sorrow over the death of Vargas Llosa in a post on social media. The country's president also posted a personal condolence message on his own account.

Vargas Llosa was born in Arequipa, southern Peru. He spent his early life in Cochabamba, Bolivia, where his grandfather worked as a Peruvian consul. He later studied at a military school and enrolled at the San Marcos National University in Lima, the Peruvian capital. Vargas Llosa was a journalist and broadcaster by profession. He studied at the University of Madrid before moving to Paris. After teaching at King's College in London for a while, he spent some time in Washington and Barcelona before returning to Lima in 1974. Mario Vargas Llosa ran for president of Peru in 1990.

However, he was defeated in the second round of the election—he lost to Alberto Fujimori. He then emigrated to Spain. He became a Spanish citizen in 1993. A year later, he won Spain's prestigious Cervantes Prize.

In an interview with the organizers after winning the Nobel Prize in 2010, he cited French writer Gustave Flaubert as his inspiration.
