Students of the Government Titumir College have rejected the proposal to merge Titumir College with seven colleges in Dhaka and form an administrative structure called 'Dhaka Central University'. They have also alleged that Titumir College has been intentionally brought under the structure.
This reaction was expressed in a statement sent to the media on Sunday evening by the college's students' organization, Titumir Oikya.
The statement, signed by the organization's office secretary, Md. Bellal Hossain, said that the students of the Government Titumir College have rejected the proposed new structure. Although our college representatives were invited to the meeting of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission, three out of the four representatives rejected the proposal outright. They clearly declared that they are not willing to take any decision without the mandate and consent of the students. At the same time, they rejected the meeting to implement a self-serving agenda in this way.
He further said that the names of the three absent students are Aminul Islam, Habibullah Roni, Md. Mehedi Hasan respectively. On the other hand, a representative, Rezae Rabbi Zayed, left the meeting room in strong protest and announced to stand firm for the just demands of the students under any circumstances.
Announcing resistance against injustice, he further said in the statement that this incident has once again proven that the ordinary students of Government Titumir College are uncompromising in their legitimate demands, traditions, identity and dignity. They are always ready to protect their institutional identity. We are committed to building strong resistance against any unjust decision.
Earlier, the name 'Dhaka Central University' was finalized for the proposed new university with seven government colleges in the capital yesterday afternoon. Such a decision was announced after a meeting held with a 32-member student delegation at the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) building in Agargaon in the capital.
The seven government colleges are - Dhaka College, Eden Women's College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, Shahid Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College and Government Titumir College.
