UN Security Council members -- including the United States, Israel's close ally -- have condemned Israel's recent strikes in Qatar's capital, Doha. They also expressed their solidarity with Qatar.
On Tuesday, Israeli forces attacked Hamas delegates who had gathered to discuss a ceasefire with Israel. One Qatari security official and five Hamas members were killed. All the UN Security Council members issued a press statement on Thursday.
The council members expressed their condemnation of the strikes and reiterated the importance of the ongoing diplomatic efforts of Qatar, Egypt and the US to mediate peace in the Middle East.
In an emergency meeting that followed, Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani expressed his gratitude for the statement.
He said, "We can see that Israel is undermining the stability of the region." He added, "Israel is trying to rearrange the region by force."
Acting US Representative to the UN Dorothy Shea said, "Unilateral bombing inside Qatar -- a sovereign nation working very hard and bravely taking risks alongside the United States to broker peace -- does not advance Israel's or America's goals."
Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon said, "There is no sanctuary for terrorists, not in Gaza, not in Tehran, not in Doha. There is no immunity for terrorists."
