Professor Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, said that the commission formed to investigate the BDR killings must be successful. They must unravel this mystery. Professor Muhammad Yunus said this when the members of the investigation commission went to meet the chief advisor at the state guest house Jamuna in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The members of the investigation commission informed the chief advisor about the progress of the investigation. They told Professor Yunus that the investigation process is progressing at full speed. They are hopeful that the investigation report will be finalized by June.
The head of the investigation commission, Major General (Retd.) ALM Fazlur Rahman, said, "We are contacting various parties. Since the incident happened 16 years ago, there is some delay in contacting many of them. Many of the accused are staying outside the country. We are inquiring about them in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."
The commission head said that the commission has interviewed some of the people in prison. He told the chief advisor, “There are 23 people abroad who need to be contacted for the investigation. Of them, 8 have contacted for interviews.”
Fazlur Rahman said, “We are investigating the pattern of killings and torture. After the killing of the DG (then Director General of BDR), the rest were killed. It was a planned killing. Such killings cannot happen without a plan. It is like a repeat of Plassey. We have to find its roots.”
Commission member Major General (Retd) Jahangir Kabir Talukder said, “Not a single officer or employee has been removed in the incident of such heinous killings. No one has been held responsible. This is the failure of the intelligence agencies, the military and the political forces.”
The chief advisor said that the government would provide maximum cooperation to the investigation commission, saying, “They brutally killed their own officers. This murder was carried out smoothly.’
Noting that the entire nation is looking towards the investigation commission, Professor Yunus said, ‘We are all looking for answers. The commission must be successful in investigating this incident. This mystery must be unraveled.’
Also present at the meeting were members of the investigation commission formed into the BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh-BGB) murder incident, Brigadier General Md. Saidur Rahman, Munshi Alauddin Al Azad, M Akbar Ali, Md. Shariful Islam, Shahnewaz Khan Chandan and ATKM Iqbal.
