Bangladesh is free to use the $2 billion line of credit it received from India in any sector it wants, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has told Parliament.
“We will be able to use [the loan] in any sector or project and the way we want,” she said in the question-answer session on Wednesday.“There is no condition,” she added, replying to a query from independent MP Md Rustum Ali Faraji.Bangladesh and India signed a memorandum of understanding on the $ 2 billion credit line during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka on June 6-7.
Earlier, India gave Bangladesh $1 billion credit to use in specific sectors, especially railways.Hasina said the first portion of that loan was used in infrastructure and transport.About the new credit, she said, “There is no condition. We can use it as we like.”
The prime minister said she would consider the sectors that will help reduce poverty or help development.“We are an independent country. The money will be taken in a friendly way to work independently,” she said.
