Bangladesh have stormed
into the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time, knocking
England out to pull off the greatest feat in their cricketing history.
The Tigers’ bowlers hunted the Englishmen down in packs to leave them 260 all out in 48.3 overs at Adelaide on Monday.
Mahmudullah Riyad earlier scored his nation's first ever World Cup century to take them to a fighting 275 for 7.
His
103 set the tone while Mushfiqur Rahim’s 89 and Souma Sarkar’s 40 made
their they gave the bowlers a competitive total to defend.
Bangladesh’s win in the tight clash took Sri Lanka to the last eight alongside Australia and New Zealand from Pool A.
England stuttered in their chase as they lost wickets regularly.
Bangladesh
broke England resistance, sending back dangerman Jos Buttler (65) and
then Chris Jordan, who ran himself out, in consecutive balls at the
Adelaide Oval on Monday.
Buttler's 41-ball fifty was well supported by Woakes.
Joe Root (29) went back in the first over of the batting powerplay edging Mashrafe Bin Mortaza back to Mushfiq.
Taskin Ahmed came back to take out James Taylor (1) who edged a short ball to Imrul Kayes in the slip.
Rubel Hossain struck twice in an over to reduce England to 123 for 4 in 27 overs.
Ian bell (63) was the first to go back, medging a short ball back to wicketkeeper Mushfiq.
A
couple of balls later, Eoin Morgan was out for duck when he hooked
Rubel but Shakib Al Hasan ran to his right at the fine leg boundary to
take a great catch.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza sent Alex Hales (27) packing, out caught behind after coming back into the attack.
Bell and Hales mixed aggression with caution, putting up 54 for the second wicket.
Moeen
Ali went back first falling short of the crease when he turned back
after opting for a run off Arafat Sunny as Soumya threw to the keeper
from mid-on.
Earlier, Mahmudullah smashed a scintillating century to register Bangladesh's first hundred in a World Cup.
Mushfiq and Mahmudullah paired for 141-run fifth wicket stand, Bangladesh’s highest for any wicket in World Cup.
Bangladesh lost both openers early after being put in to bat by England.
James Anderson sent Imrul Kayes (2) and Tamim Iqbal (2) packing, both caught in the slips, in consecutive overs.
Soumya cobbled together with Mahmudullah an 86-run stand to help the Tigers recover from the initial setback.
They played sensibly to strengthen the platform.
England, however, struck back picking up two more quick wickets to put Bangladesh on the back foot again.
Soumya
went back when Chris Jordan's bouncer brushed his gloves on its way to
the keeper as the batsman tried to duck and Shakib (2) fell soon after
being caught at slip off Ali.
Mushfiq and Mahmudullah continued fluently, cracking boundaries when necessary as Bangladesh brought up 200 in the 41st over.
Mahmudullah trickled a single off Stuart Broad to bring up the historic century, sending the crowd in raptures.
He, however, went back shortly after leaving it to Mushfiq whose 77-ball innings was laced with eight boundaries and a six.
After Mushfiq went back skying a catch off Broad, Bangladesh ended on 275 for 5.
