Police
today detained 15 Dhaka University admission seekers demonstrating to
compel authorities to hold a discussion for a second chance at entrance
tests. The students gathered at TSC area this morning in a bid to
force Dhaka University Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique to talk to
them regarding their “logical” demand.
Police dispelled them and caught 15 adminission seekers, witnesses say.
“15 persons were held on charge of creating caustic situation from the TSC area,” said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station. “They are in custody.”
On October 14, Dhaka University decided to allow only freshly passed HSC graduates to sit for admission tests, closing shutters on any second timers.
VC Siddique said the decision was taken to eliminate unequal competition between regular and irregular students, and discourage tutoring at coaching centres.
However, the university’s decision spread a wave of protests among the students who failed to get into the Dhaka University. They have been demonstrating since.
