Around 331 people were fined at Banglamotor crossing alone in today’s morning hours after Dhaka police began the week-long drive against jaywalkers on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue. Around noon, mobile court Magistrate Abdul Kuddus told reporters that about 350 people were fined for crossing Banglamotor without foot over-bridges or violating traffic rules.
However, shortage of manpower was making things difficult to control jaywalkers, our photographer reports quoting the magistrate.

Two mobile courts were working at Sonargaon and Bangla Motor roundabouts. The range of fine was from Tk20 to a maximum of Tk200.
However, no one was reported to have been sued.

Today was the opening day of the week-long drive that was launched under a pilot project to check pedestrians jaywalking on the busy Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue.
The drive began from 8:00am this morning with Dhaka Metropolitan Police warning beforehand that jaywalkers would be fined maximum Tk 200 or six months in jail for violation.
Additional police were seen deployed cautioning pedestrians to use foot over-bridges and avoid jaywalking on the stretch of the road from Ruposhi Bangla hotel to Farmgate.
Several noticeboards were also placed throughout the road for the pedestrians’ attention.
The road leading from Ruposhi Bangla hotel to Farmgate bus stand has three foot over-bridges and one underpass.

Among the two foot bridges near Farmgate bus stand, one has been sealed off and the other is under maintenance.
The lone foot bridge at Banglamotor has construction work obstructing pedestrians to board the bridge on one end and makeshift tea stalls at the other.
