US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Desai Biswal today urged the two main political parties to sit for a dialogue immediately to resolve the differences between them to ensure a free, fair and credible election.
The two main parties should take steps to hold a secretary general-level dialogue to break the deadlock immediately, the US official, who flew in Saturday on a three-day visit, said at a pre-departure press conference at American Club in the capital this afternoon.
Replying to a query on formation of the all-party polls-time government, she said the latest development underscored the urgency of a dialogue.
Biswal said she is optimistic about holding of the dialogue.
There is no room for violence in democracy, she added.
Her visit comes against the backdrop of growing political violence with Awami League and BNP sticking to their stances on polls-time government with the ruling party taking steps for an all-party government and the main opposition demanding a non-party government.
