BDR Carnage Case Reading out allegations deferred

A trial court’s move to read out allegations against the accused in the 2009 BDR carnage case yesterday was deferred by two days as the written allegations of the prosecution witnesses contained errors.
Moreover, the court decided to provide the accused with the written allegations instead of reading those out considering the huge number of accused.
The total number of charge-sheeted accused in the case is 850.
On September 2, the court wrapped up recording statements of prosecution witnesses by recording statements of 654 of them out of the total 1,333.
Aminul Islam, a defence counsel, said there were many differences between what the prosecution witnesses said earlier and what the written allegations contained.
There were written confessional statements of some accused although they had not given any confessional statements.
The court allowed two days to fix the mistakes and fixed tomorrow for the next hearing.
Earlier, the defence counsels wanted the allegations to be read out by the judge but prosecution counsels opposed this considering the large number of accused.
Fifty-seven senior and mid-ranking army officers including the then BDR chief Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed were among the 74 people killed in the 25-26 February rebellion and carnage inside the Pilkhana headquarters of the then Bangladesh Rifles, later renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh.
