Stampede in India's financial capital kills at least 22

A rush hour stampede during a sudden monsoon downpour at a railway-station in India's financial hub of Mumbai killed at least 22 people and wounded more than 30, an Indian state official said on Friday.

The cause of the stampede on a bridge at the city's central Elphinstone station during the rainstorm was being investigated, a police official at the accident site said.

"Two of the injured are in serious condition," said Deepak Sawant, the health minister of the western state of Maharashtra surrounding Mumbai, who provided the estimate of casualties.

The stampede took place after the cloudburst caught commuters off guard, prompting scores to scurry for cover under the roof of the station's pedestrian overbridge, said Akash Koteja, one of the injured.

"Trains were rolling in and some people wanted to get out of the station, but others were not making way. When a few tried, it led to a stampede," said Koteja.

The bridge is usually crowded at that time of day, as it also serves as an exit route for passengers getting off trains at an adjoining railway-station, he added.

Manish Mishra, a witness who helped some of the injured, said the situation was worsened as police and emergency officials did not respond immediately or enforce crowd control measures.

বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে তিনি বলেন, “প্রধানমন্ত্রী এখন ভালো আছেন। তিনি সার্বক্ষণিক ঢাকায় তার দপ্তরের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ রাখছেন এবং বৃহস্পতিবার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সাতটি ইলেকট্রনিক ফাইল (ই-ফাইল) ছেড়েছেন।”

ভার্জিনিয়া অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়লে ২৫ সেপ্টেম্বর স্থানীয় একটি হাসপাতালে গিয়ে শেখ হাসিনার অস্ত্রোপচার হয়। তিনি এখন সেখানেই ছেলের বাসায় বিশ্রামে রয়েছেন।

বৃহস্পতিবার শেখ হাসিনার জন্ম দিনে মায়ের সুস্থতার কথা জানিয়ে সজীব ওয়াজেদ জয় ফেইসবুকে লেখেন, “আজ মার জন্মদিনও। কিন্তু আমরা তেমন কিছু করছি না, কারণ মাকে বিশ্রামে থাকতে বলা হয়েছে।

“মার স্বাস্থ্যের জন্য শুভ কামনা ও জন্মদিনের শুভেচ্ছা যারা জানিয়েছেন, তাদেরকে ধন্যবাদ। উনি এখন ভালো আছেন।”

অস্ত্রোপচারের বিষয়ে জয় লিখেছেন, “গত সোমবার রাতে মার গল-ব্লাডারের সার্জারি হয়। আমাদের পাশের হাসপাতালে আমার এক ডাক্তার বন্ধুই সার্জারিটি করেন। সার্জারিটি অত্যন্ত সফল ছিল। পরদিন সকালেই মা বাসায় ফিরে আসেন। তিনি এখন খুব দ্রুত সুস্থ হয়ে উঠছেন।”

জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ অধিবেশনে যোগ দিতে গত ১৬ সেপ্টেম্বর নিউ ইয়র্কের পথে ঢাকা ছাড়েন প্রধানমন্ত্রী। ২১ সেপ্টেম্বর তিনি সাধারণ অধিবেশনে বক্তৃতা করেন।

জাতিসংঘের কর্মসূচি শেষে ২২ সেপ্টেম্বর প্রধানমন্ত্রী ভার্জিনিয়ায় যান। ছেলের পরিবারের সঙ্গে এক সপ্তাহ কাটিয়ে ২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর দেশে রওনা হওয়ার কথা ছিল তার।

লন্ডন হয়ে দুই অক্টোবর প্রধানমন্ত্রীর দেশে পৌছানোর কথা থাকলেও তিনি পাঁচ অক্টোবর ফিরবেন।

A police official was suspended today for assaulting journalists at Dhaka University during the half-day shutdown demanding  cancellation of Rampal power plant project near the Sundarbans.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ershad was found involved in beating up journalists and was suspended, Maruf Hossain Sorder, deputy commissioner of Ramna Division, told The Daily Star.

Ershad assaulted ATN News Cameraperson Abdul Alim at Shahbagh this afternoon. With bloody head and hands, he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the authorities found involvement of 12 other policemen from Public Order Management (POM) in assaulting another journalist in Mirpur during the hartal, the police official said.

“Action will be taken against them after scrutinising their roles,” he said.
Morshed Jahan Mithun, a sub-editor of English daily Dhaka Tribune, claimed he was assaulted by DMP Assistant Commissioner Mahbub at Mirpur 10 when he tried to inquire about information.
“Traffic police ordered a bus to plough through protesters. I asked him (AC Mahbub) why this was so. He assaulted me. When I showed my identity card, he said he doesn’t read English newspapers,” Mithun told The Daily Star.

BNP should show positive attitude

Awami League Presidium Member Mohammad Nasim today said BNP should show positive attitude towards the search committee for reconstitution of the next Election Commission.
“The members of the search committee are respected personalities of the society. BNP has to show positive approach to the neutrally made search committee,” Nasim said.
Nasim, also the Health and Family Welfare minister, was talking to reporters while paying a visit to the ENT Hospital in Tejgaon area of Dhaka this noon.
"The president has formed the search committee in accordance with the power bestowed upon him by the Constitution. The committee will only suggest names for formation of the Election Commission," he said.
Political parties should wait until formation of the EC instead of making comments, the minister added.
Terming the committee as Awami League-backed, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the committee members were appointed by the present government.
“Awami League wants to hold January 5 like election again through this search committee,” Fakhrul said.
